Minecraft: Village Challenge #Updated
« on: August 05, 2012, 06:13:02 PM »

## Updated as of 27/04/14 ##

This is a Village Challenge Rule-set I've come up with, pretty much just for the hell of it.
It is intended (but not required) to be used with the following options and conditions;

Game-mode; Survival
Level-type; Large Biomes
Difficulty; Hard (to make zombies a real threat (ability to break down wooden doors))

Do-able in Single-player, but more fun in Multi-player.

It's Game Over Man if all of the Testificates are killed!

Of course you can just use these rules on your own accord.

----------------------------

Village Challenge #1 - Testificate Edition.

Game-mode Objectives:

- Construct a village.
- Maintain a renewable Testificate(Villager) population (at least two, who are able to breed).
- Thrive, and enjoy!

Settings:

- The group is to receive a total of eight netherrack blocks, sixty-four cobblestone blocks (campfires need to be surrounded by at least one and a half block tall walls, so the Testificates do not kill themselves) and two flint and steel. These are used to create campfires and only campfires.
- Each player is to receive six pieces of Bread, three cooked Steak and a fishing rod.
- Each player is to receive twelve emerald 'coins' for trade with the Testificates.
- The group is to receive six Testificate (Villager) Eggs.
- The Testificate Population requirement will increase. More huts than mentioned will be required.

Global Rules:

- Surface stone "skimming" is allowed at game start. Stone must be in direct line of sight with sky, only a single layer may be mined.

- You cannot mine naturally generated caves/ravines etc until Stage Three.
- Cannot build furnaces until Stage Three, and can only use them for food preparation until Stage Six.
- Stone cannot be used for anything other than tools until Stage Three.
- Cannot create plant farms (wheat, melon, etc) until Stage Four.
- Cannot cage herd animals (Cows, chickens, pigs) until Stage Four - Hunting only.
- Each furnace must have a hollow, stone chimney - In effect all game.

- Torches cannot initially be placed outside, only inside structures or caves/mines (only on support beams in OPMs).

Early Tips:

You should try to stock up on a little bit of everything before you settle down, as sometimes your "perfect spot" could be miles away from a particular resource that you sorely need. What good is a home without any bloody sheep to make a bed with?

For a building location, it is usually best to start somewhere with plenty of trees, or at least a near by forest/jungle. Flat Grassland or Forest will probably be your best bet. An immediate fresh water source is strongly recommended such as a River or a Lake - Oceans are not a valid source.
Try not to depopulate your immediate surroundings of livestock too quickly, otherwise you might be looking at a long trek to find some more when you're finally able to start farming.
Wolves are a very handy tool in defending both yourself and the village from attack, especially if you are playing lone wolf.

----------------------------

Stage One; Discovery

"As we are, the explorers and settlers of the unknown."

Quote
Stage Requirements:

- Find fertile land for your clan to begin a new life.

Restrictions:

- Unable to mine.
- Above-ground resources only (wood, dirt, sand, gravel, etc).
- Small, temporary shelters only until a village location has been finalized.
- Beds cannot be used - you must either travel or hide, while at night.
- Torches may only be placed either inside, or on the village wall.

----------------------------

Stage Two; A New Life

"May huts to rest our weary heads be risen from the ground."

Quote
Stage Requirements:

- Construct one hut for every player.
- Construct a further two huts for every player hut.
- Spawn all available Testificates.
- Have a Testificate Population of six.
- [SITUATIONAL] Construct a small fishing hut on a river or ocean coast.

Restrictions:

- Unable to mine.
- Above-ground resources only.
- Beds can be used from now on in all Stages.
- Torches may only be placed either inside, or on the village wall.
- Each hut must be double-doored.
- Each hut must be at least 6x6 blocks, and have a 3 block high ceiling.
- Fishing hut must have a small pier leading out to the water.

----------------------------

Stage Three; Resources and health

"Three things are to be looked to in a building: that it stand on the right spot; that it be securely founded; that it be successfully executed."

Quote
Stage Requirements:

- Construct a mine. (May be either tunnel, or open pit)
- Construct an aqueduct leading from a water source above the village, to a well or pool located somewhere within the village. *OR* Find a near-by source of fresh water (river or lake, not oceans), and mark it with a campfire.
- Testificate Population of eight.
- Construct paths leading to every building in the village.
    > Path must be at least two blocks wide and made out of gravel or stone.
- You can now construct furnaces for food use only.
- [HINT] You will use this supply of water for the next stage.

Restrictions:

- Each furnace must have a open or tube chimney (global rule:in effect all game for all built furnaces*).
- Tunnel Mine
    > Mine (tunnel) depth is restricted to no more than six layers beneath the same layer as the village.
    > Mine (tunnel) must have wooden supports built inside every ten paces (blocks).
- Open Pit Mine
    > OPM requires vertical wooden support beams around the edge every four horizontal blocks (must reach ground level)
    > OPM maximum depth is double that of a tunnel mine.
    > Maximum of 9x9 blocks in width/length.
    > Must have direct line of sight (LoS) to the sky at all times.
- The aqueduct must be constructed of stone.
- Torches may only be placed either inside, or on the village wall.

----------------------------

Stage Four; An Agrarian People

"Where tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers therefore are the founders of human civilization."

Quote
Stage Requirements:

- Plant a farm - must contain at least thirty plants of crop (wheat, melon, potato, carrot, etc).
- Construct a paddock and fill it at least six of one type of herd animal (Pig, Chicken, Cow)
- Construct a granary to store all food supplies.
- Construct a stable to house horses.
- Have at least one single chest half full of food (minimum half stacks).
- Testificate Population of ten.

Restrictions:

- Mine depth restriction still in place.
- Torches may only be placed either inside, or on the village wall.
- The granary must have at least two silos directly connected of at least ten blocks in height and 4x4 width/depth, that are to be filled with sand blocks (for effect).
- The stable must fit at least four separately housed horses.
    > The horses must be "comfortably" housed, not crammed together.
    > Must be some hay blocks.
    > [OPTIONAL] Find Saddles. Yes, I know they're a prick to find, gl! :)

----------------------------

Stage Five; Currency

"Better is bread with a happy heart, than wealth with vexation."

Quote
Stage Requirements:

- Construct a market.***
- Build two more huts.

Restrictions:

- Market must have at least four stalls.
    > A stall must consist of at least one chest, with an adjacent Item Frame(s) displaying the Item(s) within.
    > A stall must have a shade cloth covering every block that it presides.
    > A stall must have at least one sign indicating the cost (and currency) of said Item(s).
- The market must have some colour to it.
    > Some examples; Different colour dyed wool for the cloth, carpet, small garden or fountain, etc.

***The market is hoped  to be used extensively in SMP, as players can leave unused or unwanted items with a For Sale sign. This idea relies on the same morals as this challenge; honesty and self-control. "Why risk getting court?"
And this adds the possibility of town-to-town trade if there is enough people playing on a server.

----------------------------

Stage Six; Right to Rule

"As for our Lord, who sat upon a throne fit for kings."

Quote
Stage Requirements:

- Construct a town hall/chieftain's hut/etc (a large, primary government building.)
- Upgrade the fishing hut into a trading port.
- Build four more huts.
- Testificate Population of twelve.

Restrictions:

- Trading port must have;
    > Three sizeable piers.
    > Must have six available boats to use.

    > Must have a second storey.
    > Have at least one room full of chests.
    > Be presentable to foreign traders.
        > Carpet, plants, etc.
- Mine depth restriction still in place.
- Government building must be at least three times the size of the standard hut - must be single storey.
- Torches may only be placed either inside, or on the village wall.
- Furnace use now unrestricted.

----------------------------

Stage Seven; Advancement

"The learning and knowledge that we have, is, at the most, but little compared with that of which we are ignorant."

Quote
Stage Requirements:

- Construct a blacksmith.
- Construct a public library.
- Testificate Population of fifteen.

Restrictions:

- Blacksmith must contain at least two furnaces and one anvil.
    > Each furnace must have a stone chimney (global rule:in effect all game for all built furnaces - *overrides last ruling).
    > Have a chest with thirty spare Iron Ingots inside.
- Public library must contain at least six bookshelves.
- Mine depth limit increased to a maximum depth of layer 50. (use F3 control to check this)
- Torches may only be placed either inside, or on the village wall.

----------------------------

Stage Eight; Entrenchment

"We've made too many compromises already; too many retreats. They invade our land and we fall back. They destroy entire villages and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further!"

Quote
Stage Requirements:

- Reinforce at least half of the current number of huts with Stone walls.
- Build either a wooden, or stone wall around the village - a gate is optional.

- Gather at least four horses for your stable.
    > [OPTIONAL] Find Saddles. In case you didn't find any the first time :)

Restrictions:

- Mine depth restriction still in place.
- Wall must be at least two blocks high and not be able to be jumped by mobs. (excluding spiders)
- Torches may only be placed either inside, or on the village wall.

----------------------------

Stage Nine; Gods and Kings.

"Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life."

Quote
Stage Requirements:

- Construct a shrine or monument to your God, Crukins. (pronounced "Crew-kins")
- Shrine must have a precious metal centre-piece. (Iron, Gold, Emerald, Lapis, Redstone, or Diamond block only)
- Testificate Population of twenty.
- [OPTIONAL but awesome!] Write a Holy Book in the name of your Lord.**

**An excellent example from Prophet "RickCrafter";
"Oh Lord Crukins, there shall be no other. Bless us with a prosperous 5-minute harvest, allow our asexual ways to continue to go unpersecuted, and keep zombies at bay. With your undershorts of power grant us continued life, prosperity and love, and with your mustache of justice, send us a sign that we're actually doing the right thing when we throw our prisoners into the dozens and dozens of naturally generated caves that surround us. Amen."

Restrictions:

- Shrine must be made out of Smooth Stone or Quartz block.

- Shrine must not be any more than six blocks square in width.
- Mine depth restriction still in place.
- Torches may only be placed either inside, or on the village wall.

----------------------------
