I've heard that a tafe degree in IT is worth a pile of piss, (And I've met people who have successfully completed IT courses at tafe who know absolute jack shit
)
Does this hold any weight? Would doing cert IV at tafe benefit me a good deal?
It's more than what you'd learn in school, and would definitely give you more experience and knowledge than most people doing similar stuff at Uni (assuming they haven't already done this, or had only done Cert3 etc).
And people who have done it not knowing anything, well generally they WOULD have known shit, but fail to keep practicing doing practical stuff and re-reading any theory work/Cisco. So that's their downfall not the Course's.
I've personally learned a lot more from doing that than anything they taught at school, or anything from the LAN or online. So yeah I'd say it's worth it, especially if you're doing a gap year and want to continue doing IT at Uni. They usually try to keep up-to-date with the latest tech, so it would be best to go through that than risk missing getting taught about/gain practice with new technologies coming out during that one year in between school and Uni.
It would also be a great idea if you haven't done much with M$ Office and project management, writing up reports and crap like that, would help getting a desk job if you ever go for one.
