as a gts 250 owner and now a ati 5850 owner go the ati my gts 250 was loud compared to this frame rate was fine on games it can't handle a black to white shift (playing MW2 could have 91fps then sight into thermal scope and it would drop to 15-20 moving) if you can so i would say go the ATI if you can find a few extra bucks around get a 5770 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_962&products_id=13365

5770 would be your best bet. Though iirc I did see a review sometime back that said the newer 260GTX were the best price/performance ratio-wise.

Moral of the story is; don't bother with either of those cards you suggested, get the next models up. They're not too much more expensive and the more stock power (however slight it may be) is always good.

only problem with 260 is no DX11 support (no big deal) also Ati is normally more easy to get Xfire for most low and mid range boards dont have SLI but the have Xfire making upgrading later easier and an issue with 260 is places don't stock them anymore (pcccasegear doesn't) cause the 460 is pritty much a 260 with a DX11 update (much like the 8800gt/9800gt/gts250 what ever you want to call it card )

I was just putting it out there. The 5770/5830 would indeed be the best option due to Crossfire being piss easy to do and works like a charm most of the time (I personally never had any issues with a 4890 and 4870).
Get a 5770 now, then either get a second 5770 if you've currently got a Crossfire board - if not, then either upgrade the mobo along with it, or the entire system when you get around to it (in a year or so, etc).

Oh uh, sorry guys I should have said that this video card is a temporary one for a crappy desktop, as in a couple of months I'll be building a rig from scratch.

Either way, I'd still suggest going a 5770. Whether you're going to be using it as a gaming system, stealing the card for a later rig and Crossfire it, or even selling it, the 5770 will be noticeably better than the lower model(s).
